What is GPS and GNSS ?
GPS – Global Positioning System , is a satellite-based radionavigation system owned by the United States government and operated by the United States Space Force.
GNSS - Global Navigation Satellite System , is a system that uses satellites to provide autonomous geo-spatial positioning. It allows small electronic receivers to determine their location to high precision using time signals transmitted along a line of sight by radio from satellites.
Add in
– GLONASS(Russia)
– Galileo(EU)
– BeiDou(China)
– QZSS (Japan)
– …and you have the modern GNSS
How GNSS Work
▪ Trilateration – it is all about timing…not angle
▪ To the whiteboard
– Code phase
– Carrier phase
– Corrected solutions
▪ Base stations
▪ SBAS
▪ RTK
▪ VRS
▪ IBSS
Machine Grade Control
▪ Applying a range of technologies to heavy earthmoving
equipment to either indicate or automate the control of the
work tool relative to a predetermined surface or design
▪ System tells you where to put the blade/bucket or we
do it for you…relative to the design you are trying to build
▪ Think of it as CNC machining for the earth’s surface
What are the benefits?
▪ Following numbers from a production study in 2006 – and
things have only got better since then!
▪ Road construction study
– Two side by side identical roads
– One built with conventional methods the other with machine
control and guidance
– Measuring the following:
▪ Overall productivity
▪ Machine utilization
▪ Fuel consumption
▪ Number of people on site
▪ Finished design quality
Production Study
● 100% Increase in Productivity
● 3.0 days vs. 1.5 days
● Increased Machine Utilization
● Less waiting time
● Longer passes
● Savings in Operating Cost
● 43% less Fuel consumption
● Less wear on machines
Machine Control Components
At this part IOT Devices plays a major role like
▪ Human-Machine Interface
– Display
– Lightbars
– Buzzer
– Switches
▪ System-Machine Interface
– Valve Module (unless the machine is electro-hydraulic already)
▪ Power Management
– 12/24v relay
Example
Communication Protocols
▪ CANbus
– Controller Area Network; message based protocol designed
originally for multiplex electrical wiring within automobiles
▪ Ethernet
– 4 wire
– 2 wire
▪ Serial
▪ WiFi
Communication Types
CAN ETHERNET
- Bus network - Tree network
- Terminated - Point to point
- Bus length - Max length
- Stub length
